The Drop - Durham
The Drop - Durham is an off-road navigation event based at The Cartologist, North Road, Durham, DH1 4NQ. Participants board a bus at the event centre, wear a blackout blindfold or approved alternative, and are driven to an undisclosed drop-off point. From that point they must make their own way back to the event centre; distances are measured as the crow flies so the actual return route may be longer.
Registration requires participants to hand over electronic devices and navigational aids. In exchange they receive a race number and a sealed emergency bag that must remain intact during the event. Breaking the seal on the emergency bag or using unauthorised maps or GPS devices results in disqualification.
Distances offered include:
- 6 mile
- 10 mile
- 15 mile
Live GPS tracking is available as an optional, paid feature separate from the entry fee. Trackers are stated to be accurate within 5 metres but can be affected by buildings and reception black spots; placement in an outside pocket with a clear view of the sky is recommended. All trackers must be returned to staff after the event or a replacement fee of £175 will apply.
Parking is available in the town centre. The nearest railway station is a 10 minute walk from the event HQ and a bus station is about 5 minutes away. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
