The Drop - Durham
The Drop is an off-site navigation challenge that starts and finishes at The Cartologist, North Road, Durham, DH1 4NQ. The event is scheduled for 09/08/2026 and is open to entrants aged 18 and over on that date. Entrants may take one of several distance options.
Registration requires participants to hand over all electronic devices and navigational aids. Each participant receives a race number and a sealed emergency bag. Participants board a bus, wear a blackout blindfold or an alternative safety goggle if needed, and are driven to an undisclosed drop-off location.
From the drop-off, participants must make their own way back to the event centre. Distances are measured as the crow flies; the actual route travelled may be longer. No maps, GPS, compasses, route guidance, or outside help are permitted. Breaking the seal on the emergency bag or using unauthorised navigational aids results in disqualification.
Live GPS tracking is offered as an optional, paid feature and requires a login password to share progress. Trackers are accurate within about 5 metres but can be affected by buildings or signal black spots. Trackers should be placed with a clear view of the sky and must be returned at the end of the event or a replacement fee of £175 will apply.
