The Drop - York
The Drop - York is a navigation challenge where participants are taken to an unknown location and must find their own way back to the event centre without route markers, directions, maps, GPS, or a compass. Electronic devices and watches are handed in at registration and participants receive a race number and a sealed emergency bag to carry.
Distances are measured as the crow flies; the actual route walked or run will be longer.
- 6 miles non locals only, open to participants without local route knowledge
- 10 miles core Drop distance using the event rules
- 15 miles original longer distance requiring extended decision making and effort
Deployment is by bus while wearing blackout blindfolds or approved alternatives. When blindfolds are removed, the participant’s time starts and they must return to the event centre on foot. Rules include no GPS unless devices are sealed inside the emergency bag, no unauthorised maps, on foot only, and breaking the emergency bag seal results in disqualification. Entries for the 6 mile option may be checked and local participants may be moved to the 10 or 15 mile options.
Live GPS tracking is offered as an optional safety feature for an additional cost. Trackers are accurate within about 5 metres but can be affected by tall buildings and signal black spots; trackers must be returned or a replacement fee applies.
The event centre is at Up & Running, 9 Colliergate, York, YO1 8BP. City centre parking is limited; nearby transport includes York train station and York central bus station. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
