The Devils Race Track Backyard Ultra
The Devils Race Track Backyard Ultra is a Last Runner Standing event held at the Land Trust of North Alabama’s Wade Mountain Preserve near Huntsville, AL. The event uses the traditional backyard ultra format: runners complete repeated loops of a fixed course and must be in the starting corral when the hour horn sounds to begin each loop.
Each loop is exactly 4.167 miles (4 miles 880 feet) and must be completed within the hour to count. A warning whistle sounds at three, two, and one minutes before each loop start. Except for restrooms, competitors may not leave the course during a loop. No personal aid is allowed during a loop and artificial aids such as trekking poles are prohibited. Slower runners must allow passes.
The daytime course runs on runnable singletrack trails through Wade Mountain Preserve and includes an initial short road out and back to clear the field, the Devils Race Track trail, connections with Wade Mountain and Shovelton Trails, Rock Wall Trail, and a return to the start. After dark the route moves to an out-and-back on the paved Spragins Hollow Road.
The winner is the last individual to complete a loop. If no runner completes one more loop than everyone else, there is no winner. All participants receive a shirt and a finisher cap, and runners reaching 24 hours or 100 miles receive a buckle. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
