The Devils Race Track Backyard Ultra
The Devils Race Track Backyard Ultra is a Last Runner Standing style event held at Wade Mountain Preserve near Huntsville, Alabama. The event uses a traditional backyard ultra format with a short road section to separate the field and a single-track trail loop through the Devils Race Track and adjoining trails during daylight. After dark the course moves to an out-and-back on Spragins Hollow Road.
Each loop is exactly 4.167 miles (4 miles 880 feet) and must be completed within one hour to count. Competitors must be in the starting corral when the horn sounds to begin each loop; a warning whistle will sound in the minutes before each start. Except for restroom breaks, competitors may not leave the course during a loop and non-competitors are not allowed on the course. No personal aid is allowed on course segments and no artificial aids such as trekking poles are permitted. Slower runners must allow passes.
The winner is the last individual to complete a loop. If no runner can complete one more loop than all others, no winner is declared. Results listing distance covered are provided for all participants.
Event location is the Spragins Hollow Trailhead for the Land Trust of North Alabama, Wade Mountain Preserve. Runners receive a shirt and a finisher cap, and any runner reaching 24 hours or 100 miles receives a buckle. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
