The Devils Race Track Backyard Ultra
The Devils Race Track Backyard Ultra is a Last Runner Standing event held at the North Alabama Land Trust Wade Mountain Preserve near Huntsville, AL. The event uses the traditional backyard ultra format with repeated hourly loops on a measured course.
Each loop is exactly 4.167 miles (4 miles 880 feet) and must be completed within an hour to count. The course begins with a short road out and back to spread the field and then moves onto a singletrack trail loop that includes Devils Race Track, Wade Mountain, Shovelton, and Rock Wall trails before returning to the start. After dark the event moves to an out and back on Spragins Hollow Road.
Competitors must be in the starting corral when the horn sounds to begin a loop. The starting corral is sized to fit the full field and remains the same throughout the event. Rules require no personal aid during a loop, no artificial aids such as trekking poles, and no non competitors on the course. Slower runners must allow passes. The winner is the last individual to complete a loop; if no runner completes one more loop than others there is no winner. Results record distance covered for all participants.
Finisher items include a shirt and a finisher cap, and runners who reach 24 hours or 100 miles receive a buckle. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
