The Devils Race Track Backyard Ultra
The Devils Race Track Backyard Ultra takes place at the Spragins Hollow Trailhead in the North Alabama Land Trust Wade Mountain Preserve near Huntsville, AL. The event uses the backyard ultra format with repeated one-hour loops on a fixed course.
Each loop is exactly 4.167 miles (4 miles 880 feet) and must be completed within the hour for it to count. Runners must be in the starting corral when the horn sounds to begin each loop; warning whistles sound in the final minutes before each start. Except for restrooms, competitors may not leave the course during a loop, and no personal aid is allowed while a loop is in progress. Artificial aids such as trekking poles are not permitted and slower runners must allow passes. The winner is the last individual to complete a loop; if no runner completes one more loop than anyone else, there is no winner.
During daylight the course uses runnable single-track trails through Wade Mountain Preserve with a short road section at the start to clear the field. After dark the course shifts to an out-and-back on the paved surface of Spragins Hollow Road. Organizers provide a shirt and a finisher cap to participants; runners who reach 24 hours or 100 miles receive a buckle. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
