The Devils Race Track Backyard Ultra
The Devils Race Track Backyard Ultra is a Last Runner Standing event held at the Spragins Hollow Trailhead for the Land Trust of North Alabama, Wade Mountain Preserve in Huntsville, AL. The event uses the traditional backyard ultra format: each loop is exactly 4.167 miles (4 miles 880 feet) and must be completed within the hour to continue. Runners must be in the starting corral when the horn sounds to begin a loop.
The course begins with a short road out-and-back to clear the field and then moves onto a single-track trail loop that includes the Devils Race Track, Wade Mountain, Shovelton, and Rock Wall trail sections. During nighttime hours the event runs an out-and-back on the soft base asphalt of Spragins Hollow Road. A warning whistle sounds shortly before each loop start; late starts are not allowed.
Event rules specify no personal aid during a loop, no leaving the course except for restrooms, and no non-competitors on the course. Artificial aids such as trekking poles are not permitted and slower runners must allow passes. The winner is the last individual to complete a loop; if no runner completes one more loop than all others, there is no winner. All participants receive results showing distance covered.
Participant items include a shirt and a finisher cap. Runners who reach 24 hours or 100 miles receive a buckle. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
