Trail Running in Dartmoor National Park
The Dartmoor Crossing and Great Escape are two trail running events that navigate the landscape of Dartmoor, finishing at the Ivybridge Rugby Club. Both routes feature remote sections of moorland and are fully marked and marshalled for participants.
The event offers two distinct distances:
- The Crossing: A 33.5-mile ultra-distance race with 1,119m of ascent and 1,516m of descent. The route starts in Belstone and crosses two 600m summits as it travels through the High Moor and the village of Postbridge before reaching the finish. Runners have a 9.5-hour time limit.
- The Great Escape: A 15.5-mile race starting from Princetown. This course follows the final section of the longer race, traversing the Erme Valley and the Erme canyons. It includes vistas along the Abbots Way and a long descent into Ivybridge. Runners have a 4.5-hour time limit.
The event center is located at Ivybridge Rugby Club, which provides facilities including food, drink, and a bar on race day. Overnight camping for tents, camper vans, and mobile homes is available on-site for the Friday and Saturday nights. Participants can also utilize an optional coach transfer from the finish in Ivybridge to the respective start locations in Belstone or Princetown. All finishers receive a bespoke medal, and event t-shirts are available for separate purchase.
The minimum age for the 33.5-mile race is 20 years, while the 15.5-mile event requires participants to be at least 17 years old. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
