Event Overview
The Dark is a unique endurance running event held within the Bellevue Underground Mine (BUM). This loop race takes participants through a historic coal mining shaft, offering a distinctive subterranean environment for ultrarunners and endurance enthusiasts.
Course Details
The race takes place on a 500 m loop, consisting of a 250 m out and back section inside the mine shaft. The course features a consistent 1% grade and is approximately 4 m wide for most of its length, providing enough space for participants to run side by side. The primary objective is to complete as many laps as possible within a specific time limit. The following durations are available:
- 24 hours
- 12 hours
- 6 hours
- 3 hours
Environment and Facilities
The mine maintains a constant temperature between 0°C and 2°C regardless of external weather conditions. A dedicated warming station with food is located at the entrance of the mine. Due to the spatial constraints of the underground tunnels, the event is strictly limited to 100 competitors. Participants are permitted to have support crews near the checkpoint or utilize a drop bag area at the aid station.
Location and Community
The event is held in Bellevue, Alberta, within the Crowsnest Pass region. A portion of the race proceeds is donated to the Bellevue Underground Mine. As the event coincides with Halloween, local festivities and a special costumed lap for children are integrated into the weekend program.
