The Dark is a unique underground ultramarathon held at the Bellevue Underground Mine in Alberta, Canada. Participants run loops inside a 250-meter-long mine shaft, each lap totaling 500 meters with a gentle 1% grade. The race offers 6, 12, and 24-hour time limits, challenging runners to complete as many laps as possible within their chosen duration.
The mine maintains a consistent temperature of 0 to 2°C year-round, providing stable conditions. The course is about 4 meters wide, allowing comfortable running space. Limited to 100 solo competitors, the event includes warming stations, food, and support crew access near the checkpoint.
Proceeds support the historic mine. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
