The Dark
The Dark is a loop race held inside the Bellevue Underground Mine on October 31 to November 1 2026. The event offers timed shifts in which competitors aim to complete as many laps as possible before their time ends.
The mine shaft is 250 m long with a 1% grade, so each loop measures 500 m. The gallery is approximately 4 m wide for most of its length, allowing room for four people side by side except at the old mine car. Available time options include 3, 6, 12 and 24 hours, and competitors tally laps to the end of the shaft within their chosen period.
BUM maintains stable temperatures of about 0 to 2 °C year round. A warming station with food is located at the mine entrance. The race is restricted to 100 solo runners because of the tight quarters. Support crews may station themselves near the control point but must not block race traffic if inside the tent. Drop bags are allowed at the aid station and should be noticeable and waterproof when possible.
Entrants receive a custom snap back hat as swag and a portion of proceeds is directed to the Bellevue Underground Mine. The 2026 edition coincides with Halloween and local family activities include small town trick or treating, a nearby Halloween Spooktacular for children and a Kids in the Dark lap through the mine for costumed kids.
