The Bracken Trail Race
The Bracken is a trail running event held in Brevard, North Carolina. Organized by Dirty Wolf Ultras, the race takes place on a course featuring technical single-track paths with roots, creek crossings, and significant elevation changes. The terrain is characterized by dense fern groves and rugged ridgelines within a wilderness setting.
Participants can select from three distinct distances based on a central loop:
- 50K: A four-loop course with a total elevation gain of 5,693 feet.
- 25K: A two-loop course with a total elevation gain of 2,853 feet.
- 7.5 Miles: A single loop with a total elevation gain of 1,434 feet.
The event utilizes a loop-based format where aid stations are positioned every 7.5 miles. Due to the distance between these points, runners are expected to carry necessary supplies to maintain self-sufficiency while on the trails. The course navigation includes climbing sections and sections of track lined with chaos ferns.
Registration for the event closes in early November. The start and finish area is located at 186 Pinnacle Rd in Brevard. The race is open to a variety of participants, including those attempting their first ultramarathon and experienced trail runners. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
