The Bowes Loop Half (Pennine Way)
The Bowes Loop is a trail half marathon that follows a section of the Pennine Way around Bowes. The route passes Bowes Castle on the way to the race start, follows Pennine Way markers over God’s Bridge and across Bowes Moor toward Blackton Reservoir, then loops back past Goldsborough Carr and over Deepdale Beck to finish at Bowes. Finishers return to Bowes & Gilmonby Village Hall to collect drop bags.
The course is remote and exposed. Terrain includes dirt tracks, fields, a stream crossing, tree roots and boggy sections, and finishes with about a mile on road. Trail shoes or hybrid shoes are recommended, with caution about heavy lugs because of the road finish.
Runners must carry mandatory kit: a packable waterproof jacket and trousers, a bivvy bag, a marked map, a fully charged mobile with the organisers contact details, hat, gloves and at least 500 ml of water. A whistle and compass are recommended. Spot kit checks will be made. Water bottles or disposable cups will not be provided; participants should bring a reusable bottle or cup. Water and snacks are supplied at a checkpoint on route and at the finish.
Additional practical details include toilets and bag drop at the village hall, limited parking at the hall, a minimum age of 17 and an entry fee of £24. Entries open 22 March 2026 and close 18 July 2026. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
