The Big Bear Run 10k
The Big Bear Run is a 10 kilometre event starting and finishing within the grounds of Askham Bryan Wildlife & Conservation Park in Askham Bryan, York. The route uses closed roads through nearby villages and is chip timed on an England Athletics course.
Finish-line provisions include cake and a themed medal. Event entry includes access to the animals in the Wildlife & Conservation Park; spectator passes are available separately. The organiser offers both an in-person Big Bear Run 10k and a virtual Big Bear Run 10k option.
The 2026 event supports the rescue and rehoming programme for Asiatic Black Bears run by the team at Askham Bryan. Information provided notes that these bears are native to mountain regions across several Asian countries and that they have been exploited for bear bile used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for many years. Although extraction of bear bile was legally forbidden in 2005, some bears remain in small metal cages, and rehoming is presented as a priority for the rescue programme.
