Event overview

The Abominable Snow Tri takes place on Sunday, February 22, 2026, at Cannonsburg Ski Area in Belmont, Michigan. The event is a winter sprint triathlon that uses trails for running, fat-tire biking, and cross-country skiing. Race formats offered include a full triathlon, a duathlon (run-bike), a triathlon relay (teams of three), single-discipline options (5K run or 10K fat bike), and a Fat Bike only event. Entries include items such as finisher medals, a knit hat or sweatshirt (options and upgrades vary by event), food, and beer.

Courses and race rules

  • Run: 5K made of two loops on single-track trails (Dirt Dawg and Haunted Forest), marked with blue signs; the course can be technical with steep hills and tight turns; traction devices are recommended if there is snow.
  • Bike: ~10K groomed loop, marked with orange signs; roughly 90% single track, about 450 ft of elevation gain; fat bikes required with minimum tire width 3.8 in; studded tires allowed.
  • Cross-country ski: roughly 1.8 miles per loop, marked with green signs; classic and skate skiing permitted; no cut-in classic tracks will be provided.

There will be one aid station at the transition area and no other aid stations on course; cold water and hot Gatorade will be available. Transition is reserved for multi-discipline racers and uses standard bike racks. Age-group awards (embroidered fleece beanies) are given for the triathlon in five age ranges. Post-race food and beverage are provided on site; the race supports Cannonsburg Ski Patrol. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
