About the race
Tatonka 50k & 20 Miler is a winter trail event in Potts Valley near Waiteville, West Virginia, organized by Death to Tyrants Trail Running. The race starts and finishes at the Waiteville Community Center (1735 Rays Siding Rd., Waiteville, WV 24984) and runs along sections of the Allegheny Trail.
Distances:
- 50k with 4,800 feet of elevation gain and five aid stations.
- 20 miler with 2,800 feet of elevation gain and three aid stations.
The course passes through open fields and buffalo farms, follows a ridge with meadows and grassy, somewhat rocky trails, and includes sections of deciduous forest, pines, and rhododendron. Runners ascend to a bird observatory tower on a cliff, cross the West Virginia–Virginia state border along the ridge, descend on winding gravel roads through forest, and return on paved roads past farms to the finish.
Logistics and rules include an 8.5 hour cutoff for each distance and a strict no refunds policy regardless of weather. Performance long sleeve shirts are provided to starters, with sizes guaranteed for entrants registered by December 16. Finisher awards are presented to all finishers and custom beanies are awarded to the top three in each distance. Proceeds include a donation to the Allegheny Trail through WV Scenic Trails.
