Tatonka 50k & 20 Miler
Tatonka 50k and 20 mile take place in Potts Valley near Waiteville, West Virginia, with a start and finish at the Waiteville Community Center, 1735 Rays Siding Rd. The event is scheduled for January 16, 2027 and is hosted by Death to Tyrants Trail Running.

The 50 km course has about 4,800 feet of elevation gain and the 20 mile option has about 2,800 feet of gain; the 20 mile course may include an extra mile. Runners climb to a bird observatory tower on a cliff with panoramic windows, continue along a rolling ridge through meadows and rocky trails, and return along the WV/VA state border with a gradual grassy descent. The final sections include a winding gravel road through forest and a paved road back to the start past farms.
The race uses sections of the Allegheny Trail, a 315 mile trail through West Virginia, and a portion of proceeds will be donated to West Virginia Scenic Trails. Aid stations number five for the 50k and three for the 20 miler. Cutoff time is 8.5 hours for either distance.
Additional event notes: performance long sleeve shirts are provided to starters with sizes guaranteed for registrations by December 16; finisher awards are given in each distance and top three finishers receive custom beanies. There are no refunds for any reason. Nearby Paint Bank, VA offers hotels, a two story country store, Tinglers Mill, and dining at Swinging Bridge Restaurant.
