Tackle the Tar : event overview
Tackle the Tar is an annual 5K obstacle course race and family fun day hosted by the Rotary Club of Rocky Mount. The event begins at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex and routes through historic Battle Park and the E.B. Grain Company property. The course includes a mud pit and more than 15 obstacles, including a 16-foot climbing wall, tire and log features, culvert tunnels, rope-net climbs, pond crossings, and multiple crawl sections.
All registered racers receive a T-shirt, a medal, a goodie bag, and one free beer for participants over 21. The event includes timed heats for adults; the 1-mile kids race is not timed. Packet pickup is available on the Friday and Saturday of race week.
Age and participation rules are specified: runners must be at least 14 years old to enter the 5K; children ages 8 to 13 may run the 1-mile kids course; participants ages 14-15 must run with a parent or guardian and are excluded from competitive heats; participants ages 16-17 may run in fun runs only with parental consent.
Proceeds fund college scholarships for students in the Rocky Mount area; the event has awarded over $720,000 in scholarships since 2016. Special heats include first responders and local college students, and group rates are available for block purchases. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
