Swan Lake Grit-N-Gravel Triathlon
The Swan Lake Grit-N-Gravel Triathlon takes place at the Swan Lake Resort & Campground in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. The event features a rugged course through lake country, utilizing a mix of water, gravel roads, and trails. This competition is timed manually and casually; while podium finishers for men and women are recognized, detailed time reports and splits are not provided to athletes.
Participants can choose from the following event formats:
- Individual Triathlon (1,000 yard swim, 18 mile bike, 4 mile run)
- Team Relay Triathlon (1,000 yard swim, 18 mile bike, 4 mile run)
- Kids Duathlon (Short gravel bike loop and mini run)
The 1,000 yard swim begins at a sandy beach in Swan Lake, with a course depth reaching 8 feet and water temperatures typically around 70°F. The 18 mile bike segment consists of 60% hilly gravel roads and 40% paved surfaces on the Central Lakes Trail, with a total elevation gain of over 1,000 feet. The 4 mile run follows an out-and-back route on a mix of hiking trails, gravel roads, prairie trails, and wooded paths, including elevation changes near Ugly Duckling Lodge.
The kids race is held entirely on the resort property for participants aged 2 to 12. For the main triathlon, aid stations are located at the halfway point of the bike course in Dalton and at the turnaround point of the run. Registration requires a USA Triathlon membership ID for insurance purposes. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
