Superior Hee-Haw Hustle
The Superior Hee-Haw Hustle is a pack burro race in Superior, Arizona, held on Main Street and on nearby trails. Racing teams consist of one human and one burro. Burro rental is a separate fee and teams must secure a burro before registering.
Courses are out-and-back and use the Legends of Superior Trail with portions of the Arizona Trail on the longest route. Course options include:
- 3 Miles pack saddle optional
- 6.2 Miles pack saddle optional, enters Tonto National Forest
- 17 Miles pack saddle required for prizes, uses Arizona Trail portions
The 17 mile course includes technical sections and possible water crossings. To qualify for prizes on the long course the burro must carry a pack saddle equipped with a pick, gold pan, and shovel or pick/shovel combo. Hoof boots are recommended for the long course.
Safety and race control features include mandatory check-in stations (one for the short course, four for the long course), enforced pace requirements on the long course, and sweep procedures that remove teams not meeting checkpoint standards. Rules require no riding, only donkeys/burros may race, a halter and lead rope (no longer than 15 ft) are required, and no outside assistance that advances a team is allowed. Common disqualifications include mistreatment of the burro, losing required equipment, interfering with other teams, or failing mandatory checkpoint procedures.
Burro camp is at the Superior Municipal Airport with dry camping spaces for a fee, potable water, portable toilets, hand wash stations, a manure trailer, and a shuttle service between camp and the race start. Camp spaces are designated and campers must provide their own stalls or corrals if needed. Participants must sign waivers and follow local veterinary and health requirements for out-of-state burros.
