Sundowner 5k
The Sundowner 5k takes place Thursday, July 16 at Pilcher Park and uses a USATF certified, scenic wooded route through the park. The event has run for more than 25 years and is chip timed. Pre-registered entrants choose a unisex short-sleeve performance shirt or a women's racerback tank and all finishers receive a medal. A post-race cookout in the pavilion follows the race; past menus have included hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, chicken sandwiches, chips and cookies.
Awards are given to the overall male and female winners, masters winners age 50 and over, and the top three male and female finishers in each age group. Age groups run from 0-9 through 80+. Organized groups of 15 or more receive a five dollar discount per runner. Inwood Run Club rates are available but club members are not eligible for the group discount.
Packet pickup for pre-registered runners is Wednesday, July 15 from 6a to 7p in the Community Room at Inwood Athletic Club (3000 W. Jefferson in Joliet); race day packet pickup is also available. There is no separate virtual registration; runners who register to run virtually must pick up packets in person. Walkers are welcome but are strongly encouraged to maintain about a 15 minute per mile pace so participants clear the course before nightfall.
Limited parking is available near the Barber and Oberwortmann Horticultural Center. Francis Road is scheduled for a construction closure; offsite parking near the Nature Center will be served by a free shuttle. Gear check is provided and unclaimed items will be returned to Inwood Athletic Club for pickup the following day starting at noon. No refunds will be issued for inclement weather or race cancellation. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
