Event overview
The Summer Sendoff is an annual running and walking event in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania. The event includes two distances:
- 5K
- 1 Mile
The 5K uses the "Byers Loop" course. The 1 Mile is a walk and includes games along the route. Every registered participant receives a event T-shirt. Cash prizes are offered for the top three overall male and female finishers. Medals are awarded to the top three finishers in each age group from 9 and under up to 70 and over. Additional on-site features listed for the event include music, a water station, a tent at the start/finish area, raffle baskets, and bib number prizes. Timing services are provided by 2L Race Services.
Location, purpose and history
The event is held at Pickering Valley Elementary School and Eagle Crossroads Park, 121 Byers Road, Chester Springs, PA 19425. The Summer Sendoff aims to strengthen community ties while raising funds and awareness for a local nonprofit. Best Buddies is named as a nonprofit recipient and a portion of registration fees is donated. The event began as a graduation service project in 2022 by Downingtown East and STEM Academy cross country and track and field athletes. In 2024 the event reported donating over $2,000 to Best Buddies with more than 225 registered participants. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
