Summer Sendoff 5K and 1 Mile
The Summer Sendoff is an annual community event held in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania. Entering its fifth year, the event takes place at Pickering Valley Elementary School and Eagle Crossroads Park. The courses utilize the local landscape, including the 5K "Byers Loop" which covers paved roads and park paths. Participants can choose between two primary distances:
- 5K running race
- 1 Mile walk
The 1 Mile walk features various games situated along the route. For the 5K race, timing services are provided to track participant results. The start and finish area includes a tent, a water station, and music.
Registered participants receive a commemorative t-shirt. The event recognizes competitive performance with cash prizes for the top three overall male and female finishers in the 5K. Additionally, medals are awarded to the top three finishers across several age groups, ranging from 9 and under to 70 and over. Attendees may also participate in raffle baskets and bib number prize drawings.
The event serves as a fundraiser for Best Buddies, a non-profit organization focused on individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. A portion of every registration fee is donated to support their mission of inclusivity, friendship, and integrated employment. This tradition originated in 2022 as a local student service project and continues as a seasonal community gathering held rain or shine.
