Event Overview

The Summer Extravaganza is a popular running event offering five distances on a flat, fast canal towpath course in Kirkstall, near Leeds. The event features a social atmosphere with refreshments provided at the finish.

Course and Location

The route is entirely on the canal towpath next to the Leeds/Liverpool Canal in Kirkstall, approximately three miles from central Leeds. The course is a looped layout, with each lap measuring 6.7 miles. The terrain is described as flat and "great underfoot." The start/finish area is accessible by public transport.

The event has a 6.5-hour cut-off time.

Facilities and Details

Registration takes place at the Hollybush Conservation Centre on Broad Lane, which is across the road from the start/finish area. Toilets are available at this centre. Free car parking is provided at Morrisons in Kirkstall, a short walk away. Bib collection occurs on the event day.

A £1 donation is made to the Hollybush charity for every runner. The event is licensed by the Trail Running Association.

On-Course Support

Multiple feed stations are located approximately every three miles along the course, offering water and food. Organizers encourage participants to bring their own reusable cup or bottle. Marshals are present on the course to provide encouragement.

Finish Line and Policies

All finishers receive a bespoke medal. Post-race refreshments include a BBQ roll (with gluten-free and vegan options), cake, sweets, and a selection of tea, soft drinks, and beer.

A policy is in place regarding headphones: large over-ear headphones are banned for safety reasons, though bone-conducting or "one in one out" in-ear headphones are permitted. Participants should be aware of potential unmarshalled road crossings on the route.
