Knaresborough Running Festival
Old Mother Shipton's Soft Shoe Shuffle is a running event set in the heart of Knaresborough, North Yorkshire. The festival provides a variety of course lengths through the regional countryside, utilizing a 6.5-mile lap system. Runners complete a specific number of laps depending on their selected distance.
The course begins in the center of Knaresborough and features a gentle climb through parkland. Participants then follow the old railway track located between Knaresborough and Harrogate. The terrain consists of a mix of forest tracks, quiet country lanes, and a converted rail track. Although categorized as a trail event, the surfaces are firm enough that road shoes are often advised.
Available distances include:
- 10k (ish)
- Half Marathon
- 20 Miler
- Marathon
- Ultra Marathon
The event is licensed by the Trail Running Association and operates as a cup-less race to reduce waste; participants must provide their own reusable bottles or cups. Feed stations are positioned approximately every 3 miles offering water, snacks, and fuel. Registered finishers receive a bespoke medal and post-race refreshments.
Facilities include public toilets at the Mother Shipton Cave, Conyngham Carpark. A public pay and display car park is located a short walk from the registration area. For safety, the use of large over-ear headphones is not permitted, though bone-conduction or single-earbud headphones are allowed to ensure runners remain aware of potential unmanned road crossings.
