About the race
The event is the 20th annual Steps for Shep 5k Road Race and 1 Miler held on September 26, 2026 at the Barnett Center, Northern State University, 1200 S Jay Street, Aberdeen, SD. It is organized on Homecoming weekend and includes both in-person and virtual participation options.
Race options include:
- 5K Road Race in person
- 1 Mile Run/Walk in person
- Virtual 5K
- Virtual 1 Mile Walk/Run
Participants may walk, jog, or run the chosen route. All in-person participants receive a bib. Virtual options are available for those who cannot attend in person.
Registration details provided by the organizer note a standard in-person fee of $25 which includes a t-shirt, while virtual entries carry a $30 fee. NSU students with a valid ID may register free; student t-shirts are available for $20. Registrations made by September 18 are guaranteed a t-shirt; requests after that date cannot be guaranteed.
Proceeds from the event go toward a memorial scholarship fund to benefit an NSU track and cross country student-athlete majoring in Health and Physical Education. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
