About the race
The Steamtown Marathon is a USATF certified, point-to-point event held in northeastern Pennsylvania. The course runs from Forest City High School in Forest City, PA, to Courthouse Square in downtown Scranton on North Washington Avenue. The route has a net elevation drop of 955 feet and includes several miles on mostly paved Rails to Trails along the Lackawanna River.
Multiple race options are offered on race weekend:
- 26.2 Miles Marathon (running only)
- 26.2 Miles Wheelchair/Handcycle Marathon
- 2.62 Miles Steamtown Runner
Specific rules and course notes include a requirement that wheelchair and handcycle competitors may not pass the lead vehicle, and that the wheelchair course contains several steep downhills. Marathon runners are expected to finish within six hours. Registration windows and entry fees are set for each event; the marathon and wheelchair divisions share the same registration period early in the year while the 2.62 miler opens later in the season.
