  • 26.3 mi (marathon) with about 4,500 ft of vertical gain

The course ranges from 8,200 ft to 9,500 ft in elevation, with an average elevation around 9,000 ft. Terrain is primarily singletrack (90%) with some dirt road (10%). Local wildlife on course includes marmots, raptors, elk, mule deer, black bears, and mountain lions. Registration is capped at 150 runners for each distance. Time allowances are 10 hours for the marathon and 9 hours for the half. Registration for the 2026 event opens December 15, 2025.

Course and logistics

The marathon and half use well-marked trails with pink flagging, directional arrows, and confidence flagging on longer stretches. The marathon route includes multiple aid stations and a finish cut-off; the half has separate aid station splits and a finish cut-off. Full service aid stations provide sports drink, water and ice, salty snacks, fruit, sweets, soda, sandwiches, and a unique treat per station. Gluten-free and vegan alternatives are available at most aid stations; backcountry conditions mean cross-contamination is possible.

Park restrooms are available at the start/finish area, Mason Creek Trailhead, and near the Elk Pond approach. Crew and spectators must use designated aid stations for assistance; pacing or crewing outside those spots may result in disqualification. Crew vehicles and spectators must pay the park entry fee or hold a Colorado State Parks pass. Parking at the park is prioritized for carpools of two or more registered runners; single-runner vehicles are directed to an offsite park-and-ride served by shuttles.
