Event Information
The 18th Annual Rocco Laurie Memorial Staten Island Triathlon/Duathlon is scheduled for Sunday, August 9, 2026. It includes six event formats: Triathlon, Duathlon, Team Relay Triathlon, Team Relay Duathlon, Aquabike, and a Volunteer 1 for 1 option. The event attracted nearly 400 competitors in the previous year.
Distances & Format
- Triathlon: A 400-meter swim in the open water at Midland Beach, a 12-mile bike ride (3 laps), and a 3-mile run.
- Duathlon: A 3-mile run, followed by the same 12-mile bike ride, and concluding with another 3-mile run.
- Aquabike: This format includes the swim and bike segments only.
Course Details
The race start is at the transition area by a baseball field at the west end of Father Capodanno Blvd. The swim start is 0.25 miles east of the transition area. The bike course takes place on the closed-off Father Capodanno Blvd, described as flat with no significant elevation gain. The run segment occurs on the Franklin D. Roosevelt Boardwalk. A safety team including lifeguards and NYPD Water Patrol will be on duty for the swim. Wetsuits are optional.
Event Background
The race is held as a memorial to honor Rocco Laurie, a Vietnam veteran and NYPD officer who died in 1972. The idea originated from Larry Ambrosino of the Rocco Laurie Scholarship Fund. The event is not USAT certified or sanctioned, so a USAT racing license is not required. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
