Event Overview

The Spring Backyard Burn Trail Run at Laurel Hill Park is a trail running event held at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virginia. The event takes place on a Sunday in March.

Course Details

The race is held on a course located on 1600 acres of former prison grounds. It features a mix of forested and open meadow terrain. The route is described as one of the least technical, with most of it on singletrack made of dirt and crushed stone. There are only short pavement sections at the beginning and end. There are no extended climbs, but the course has many short ups and downs.

Participants can choose between two distances:

  • A 5.4-mile course, which involves one lap and has an elevation gain of 350 feet.
  • A 10-mile course, which involves two laps and has an elevation gain of 700 feet.

Race Day Information

The start and finish area is under old guard towers at the Workhouse Arts Center. A free kids race is available for ages 2-11, with participants able to choose a prize from a treasure box. A paid, pre-registration child care program is also offered by Little Fern Learning. Post-race food includes breakfast burritos and other items.

Finisher medals are an optional add-on purchase. All participants completing all four races in the series receive a special medal at no extra cost. The event features awards for the top five finishers in each category. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
