Spring Backyard Burn Trail Run - Pohick Bay
The Spring Backyard Burn at Pohick Bay Regional Park in Lorton is part of a series of trail races offering 5 Mile and 10 Mile options on April 12, 2026. The event uses local trail networks that combine forested fire roads, narrow hiking trails, stream crossings, grassy fields, and minimal pavement.
The course is described as moderately technical with tight single-track sections, wider double-track, notable climbs, and flowing descents. The venue sits on Gunston Cove adjacent to Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge and Gunston Hall; runners may encounter water views and frequent bald eagle sightings. Recorded elevation gain for the course is provided for each distance.
- 5.9 miles (1 lap) - 500 feet elevation gain
- 10.4 miles (2 laps) - 850 feet elevation gain
Registration includes professional race operations, volunteer support, aid stations, medical support, post-race food such as breakfast burritos, music, awards, and a race t-shirt. Finisher medals are an optional add-on with a pre-order and on-site price; completing all four races in the series earns a special series medal at no additional cost.
A race day kids program is available through Little Fern Learning with morning drop-off and pickup after the kids race; pre-registration and separate fees apply. Race rules include no in-ear headphones, no pets or pacers, visible race numbers on the front, and staying on designated trails. Age group divisions cover Male Female and Non-Binary categories across youth and decade-based adult ranges. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
