Spring Backyard Burn Trail Run - Pohick Bay
The Spring Backyard Burn Trail Run at Pohick Bay takes place in Lorton, Virginia, within Pohick Bay Regional Park. The event is situated on Gunston Cove, adjacent to the Mason Neck National Wildlife Refuge and Gunston Hall. The course features views of the water and passes through areas where bald eagles are frequently sighted.
Participants can choose between two race distances:
- 5.9 miles (1 lap)
- 10.4 miles (2 laps)
The terrain comprises a mix of tight single-track and wide double-track trails. The 5.9 mile course involves approximately 500 feet of elevation gain, while the 10.4 mile course involves 850 feet of gain. The route includes climbs and descents described as moderately technical. Portajons and bathrooms are located at the start and finish area, but no facilities are available on the course itself.
The event includes a free race for children aged 2-11, which consists of short out-and-back runs divided by age group. A supervised childcare program with nature exploration and STEM activities is also available for a fee.
Registration includes a race t-shirt or running socks, professional timing, and post-race food such as breakfast burritos. Finisher medals are available as an optional add-on. The race rules prohibit the use of in-ear headphones, pets, pacers, and baby strollers on the course. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
