Event overview
The Sourdough Snowshoe Race takes place in Nederland, CO on January 31, 2026. It is a donation-based backcountry event and plans may change for runner safety due to trail conditions. Snowshoes are required for the entirety of the race regardless of snowpack. Racers are required to carry 20 ounces of liquid and 600 calories of nutrition. Bib pick-up and race day registration occur at the South Sourdough Trailhead. Carpooling is encouraged because ski traffic can be heavy. Cell phone service is spotty in Nederland.
Course and support
Racers begin at the South Sourdough Trailhead and head north on the trail to Brainard Lake Road. The 18K route turns around at Brainard Lake Road and returns to the trailhead. The 30K route continues across Brainard Lake Road, follows the Sourdough Trail loop, returns to Brainard Lake Road, then back to the trailhead. There is a cutoff at Brainard Lake Road for 30K runners; runners who miss the cutoff must turn around with the 18K group and check in with the aid station so their finish is recorded as 18K rather than DNF. An aid station will be at the Brainard Lake turnaround offering hot and sweet Sport Tea, energy gels and granola bars. A small finish area will have a warming tent, a propane fire pit, and hot cider or cocoa. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
