Sourdough Snowshoe Race
This is a donation based backcountry snowshoe race that tours the winter landscape around the Brainard Lake area. The event is based at the South Sourdough Trailhead, 115 Co Rd 116, Nederland, CO 80466, near the University of Colorado Mountain Research Station off Peak to Peak Highway CO 72.
The course begins at the South Sourdough Trailhead and proceeds north to Brainard Lake Road. The shorter course turns around at Brainard Lake Road and returns to the trailhead. The longer course continues across Brainard Lake Road onto the Sourdough Trail loop before returning to Brainard Lake Road and back to the trailhead. There is an outbound cutoff at Brainard Lake Road; participants who miss the cutoff will be directed to return with the shorter group and their finish will be recorded at the shorter distance. All participants must wear or carry their snowshoes for the entirety of the race regardless of snowpack.
Required gear includes carrying at least 1 L of fluid and 600 calories of nutrition. Bib pick-up, check-in, and race-day registration take place at the South Sourdough Trailhead. Organizers note ski traffic on access routes and that cell phone service in Nederland can be spotty.
Aid station provisions include hot and sweet Sport Tea, water, granola bars, bacon, and warming features such as a Solo Stove, chairs, and blankets. A small finish-line hangout features a warming tent, a propane fire pit, and hot cider or cocoa.
