Soap Box Derby 5K
The Soap Box Derby 5K takes place during Race Week at the International Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio on July 12, 2026. The event is based at Derby Downs, 789 Derby Downs Dr, Akron, OH 44306, and includes multiple short-distance races on the derby property, with the final stretch on the Derby Downs track.
Distances
- Adult 5K Run / Walk, registration opens December 1, 2025 and closes June 11, 2026, registration fee $35.00
- Youth 5K Run / Walk, registration opens December 1, 2025 and closes June 11, 2026, registration fee $25.00
- The 989 Dash, a 329 yard race; registration opens January 14, 2026 and closes July 12, 2026, registration fee $9.89. The number 989 refers to the distance in feet from the soap box derby starting line to the finish line, the distance traveled by Soap Box Derby champions in their racers.
All finishers receive an event shirt and a custom medal. Awards are given to Top 3 Overall Men and Women, Top 1 Master Men and Women, and Top 3 Men and Women in age groups 1-10, 11-13, 14-16, 17-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, and 85 plus.
