Yr Wyddfa Ultra 50
Yr Wyddfa Ultra 50 is a 45 mile mountain ultramarathon held in Snowdonia Eryri, based in the village of Betws-y-Coed. The event in 2026 is the eighth edition, offers 250 places and uses a 20 hour overall cut off.
The route follows mountain trails and the Snowdonia Slate Trail, passing features such as Tryfan, the Yr Wyddfa summit, Glyder Fach and Glyder Fawr, Devil’s Kitchen, Llyn Idwal, Llyn Crafnant and Llyn Geirionydd. The course includes significant ascent and a mix of upland paths, woodland trails and some road crossings where roads are not closed.
Entry requires applicants to be at least 20 years old and to have prior ultramarathon and mountain experience; applications are reviewed case by case. Runners must be competent map readers and not solely reliant on GPS for navigation.
Mandatory kit must be carried at all times and is subject to random checks; required items include a hardcopy map, compass, waterproof coat and trousers, 1 litre minimum water, headtorch (min 75 lumens) plus a backup light, survival bag, emergency rations, fully charged phone in a waterproof bag and a GPS tracker provided at registration. Failure to carry mandatory kit or to check in at checkpoints may result in disqualification.
There are five checkpoints with refreshments and medical cover. Finishers earn UTMB/ITRA mountain points and receive Gold, Silver or Bronze finisher medals depending on finishing position. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
