Smithfield Sprint Triathlon
The Smithfield Sprint Triathlon is an April multisport event held on the outskirts of Smithfield in southeast Virginia and hosted at the Luter Family YMCA. The race uses a time-trial pool swim followed by a road bike and an out-and-back run, with transition located in the YMCA parking lot.
Swim details: the indoor pool is a six-lane, 25 meter pool. Athletes start one at a time every 5–10 seconds and "snake swim" across lanes, passing under the lane line on each length. Starts are self-seeded and swim times are recorded at the pool edge. A gear drop is available outside the pool.
Bike course: a 10 mile road course that heads west from Smithfield. The course has good pavement, three turns, and a notable 120 degree left uphill at about mile 3.9. The route is described as largely flat.
Run course: an out-and-back 5K that leaves east from transition, passing through Windsor Castle Park and its woodland trails, boat launch, fishing pier, and historic manor house. Water is available at the start and at a mid-course station.
Additional notes: the event is USA Triathlon sanctioned and includes age group, aquabike, military, Clydesdale, Athena and relay categories. Participants must collect their own race packet and present photo ID; a phone photo of ID is accepted. Post-race items include a tech shirt, socks, finisher medal and post-race food.
