Smithfield Sprint Triathlon
The Smithfield Sprint Triathlon is an early season multisport event held on the outskirts of Smithfield, Virginia. Hosted by the Luter Family YMCA, the race offers a course that transitions from an indoor pool setting to the rural landscapes of the southeast corner of the state. Participants can choose between the full sprint triathlon or an aquabike category, with options for individual entry or relay teams.
The event features the following distances:
- Sprint Triathlon: 300 meter pool swim, 10 mile bike, and 5k run.
- Aquabike: 300 meter pool swim and 10 mile bike.
The competition begins with a 300 meter time trial "snake swim" in a 25 meter indoor pool. Athletes enter the water one at a time and navigate across six lanes before moving to the transition area in the parking lot. The 10 mile bike segment follows a west-bound route on flat, paved rural roads with minimal turns. The final leg is a fast, flat out-and-back 5k run that heads east through local neighborhoods and into Windsor Castle Park, featuring woodland trails and views of the historic manor house.
This USA Triathlon sanctioned event provides participants with a race shirt, socks, and a finisher's medal. Post-race amenities include a grab-and-go BBQ meal.
