Smithfield Sprint Triathlon
The Smithfield Sprint Triathlon takes place on the outskirts of Smithfield in the southeast corner of Virginia and is hosted by the Luter Family YMCA each April. The event is USA Triathlon sanctioned and offers multiple competition categories including age group, aquabike, military, Clydesdale, Athena and relay teams.
Distances:
- Triathlon: 300 meter pool swim; 10 mile bike; 5K run
- Aquabike: 300 meter pool swim; 10 mile bike
The swim uses the Luter Family YMCA indoor pool, a six lane 25 meter facility where athletes start one at a time with staggered 5 to 10 second intervals and swim across the lanes in a snake pattern. The swim is self seeded and athletes cross a timing mat at pool edge. A gear drop is available near the pool entrance and transition is located in the YMCA parking lot.
The 10 mile bike course heads west from Smithfield, is described as very flat with good pavement, and contains three turns including a 120 degree left uphill turn near mile 3.9. The out and back 5K run leaves east from transition and passes through Windsor Castle Park, which includes woodland trails, a boat launch, a fishing pier and the historic manor house Windsor Castle. Water is provided at the start and at a mid course station.
Packet pickup is offered in the days before the race at the Luter Family YMCA gym and a pre race meeting is held the evening prior and streamed live on Facebook. Registrations are non refundable; race deferrals and one day USA Triathlon licenses are available. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
