Smithfield Sprint Triathlon
The Smithfield Sprint Triathlon is held on the outskirts of Smithfield in the southeast corner of Virginia and is hosted by the Luter Family YMCA. The event uses a time trial pool swim, a 10 mile bike course, and an out-and-back 5K run.
Distances:
- Triathlon: 300 meter pool swim, 10 mile bike, 5K run
- Aquabike: 300 meter pool swim, 10 mile bike
Swim details: the indoor pool is a six lane, 25 meter facility. Athletes start one at a time in a self-seeded time trial format, moving across lanes in a snake pattern and returning down each lane. A gear drop is available at pool entry and the swim exit leads to the transition area in the parking lot.
Bike course: the 10 mile route heads west out of Smithfield, is described as flat with good pavement, and contains exactly three turns. The course includes a 120 degree left uphill turn at about mile 3.9 and a reported elevation gain of 222.8 feet.
Run course: the out-and-back 5K leaves east from transition, passes through quiet neighborhoods and Windsor Castle Park, and reverses about 1.55 miles out. Windsor Castle Park features woodland trails, a boat launch, a fishing pier, and the historic manor house Windsor Castle. Water is available at the start and at the midpoint of the run.
Race information: the event is USA Triathlon sanctioned. Categories include Overall, Masters Overall, Age Group, Aquabike, Military, Clydesdale, Athena, and Relay Teams, with scoring three deep. Registered athletes receive a race shirt, socks, a finisher medal, and post race food and drink. Registrations are non refundable; race deferrals are available. USA Triathlon membership or a one day license is required, with one day license fees set by race distance. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
