Smithfield Sprint Triathlon
The Smithfield Sprint Triathlon is held at the Luter Family YMCA on the outskirts of Smithfield, Virginia in April. The event uses a time trial pool swim followed by a 10 mile bike and a 5 km out and back run.
Distances included:
- Triathlon: 300 meter pool swim, 10 mile bike, 5 km run
- Aquabike: 300 meter pool swim, 10 mile bike
The swim takes place in the YMCA’s indoor 6-lane, 25 meter pool. Athletes start individually in a self-seeded time trial format and swim a “snake” pattern across lanes. A gear drop is available at pool entry and the transition area is located in the parking lot.
The bike course heads west out of Smithfield on generally flat, rural roads. The route has three turns and includes a notable 120 degree left turn with an uphill section near mile 3.9. Pavement is described as good throughout.
The run is an out and back 5 km that leaves transition, passes through local neighborhoods, and goes through Windsor Castle Park. Water is provided at the start and at the mid point of the run.
The event is USA Triathlon sanctioned. Race categories include Overall, Masters, Age Group, Aquabike, Military, Clydesdale, Athena and Relay Teams. Packet pickup occurs at the YMCA in the days before the race and participants must collect their own packet with photo ID. Registered athletes receive race apparel, a finisher medal, post-race food and drink, and event photos. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
