Smithfield Sprint Triathlon
The Smithfield Sprint Triathlon is an April multisport event hosted by the Luter Family YMCA on the outskirts of Smithfield in the southeast corner of Virginia. The event offers a short pool swim, a 10 mile bike route on rural roads, and a flat 5 km out-and-back run through local neighborhoods and Windsor Castle Park.
Distance options:
- Triathlon: 300 meter pool swim, 10 mile bike, 5 km run
- Aquabike: 300 meter pool swim, 10 mile bike
Swim details: the swim takes place in a 6-lane, 25 meter indoor pool using a time trial format. Athletes start one at a time, typically every 5-10 seconds, and swim across lanes in a snake pattern. A gear drop is available near the pool and the transition area is located in the parking lot.
Bike details: the 10 mile bike course is mostly flat with good pavement and three turns; it includes a notable 120 degree left uphill turn near mile 3.9 and travels west out of Smithfield.
Run details: the out-and-back 5 km run passes through quiet neighborhoods and Windsor Castle Park, with water available at the start and at a mid-course station. The event is sanctioned by USA Triathlon and includes age group, aquabike, military, Clydesdale, Athena, and relay categories. Packet pickup occurs at the Luter Family YMCA Gym; participants must present photo ID to collect their packet. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
