Event Overview
The Smith Point Sprint Triathlon is a multi-sport event held at Smith Point County Park in Shirley, NY. This competition features a course that moves from the calm waters of Narrow Bay to a finish line located at the Atlantic Ocean beach front. Participants can register for several different categories, including individual sprint triathlon, relay teams for two or three people, AquaBike, and a bike-run option.
The event follows a specific course layout for each segment:
- Swim: 500 Meters in the calm waters of Narrow Bay.
- Bike: 10.2 Miles consisting of two laps for increased police coverage and safety.
- Run: 5 Kilometers which takes athletes over a bridge toward the ocean.
Participation and Regulations
As a USAT sanctioned event, all participants must either hold an annual USA Triathlon membership or purchase a one-day license. Transition areas open early in the morning, and athletes must rack their bicycles at designated spots corresponding to their bib numbers. Helmets are mandatory during the bike portion and must be buckled before leaving the transition area.
Electronic timing is provided via a chip worn on the ankle. Individual timing chips are disposable, while relay teams must return their chips at the finish line. Results are categorized by age groups starting from 14-18 up to 75+, with additional divisions for Clydesdale, Athena, and challenged athletes.
The event provides ample parking at Smith Point County Park next to the start and finish area. Participants who register after July 27 are not guaranteed an event t-shirt. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
