Overview
The Dales Traverse® is a 55 km ultra that follows Wainwright’s coast-to-coast route from Kirkby Stephen to Richmond through the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The route includes the Nine Standards and weaves through Swaledale to a finish below Richmond Castle. The event emphasises an adventurous ethos and a culture of self-sufficiency. The minimum age for entry is 18.
Route and event details
The route has an estimated height gain of about 1,400 m and varies between editions. Route navigation support includes a waterproof race map issued at registration, a GPX file, and a digital map via the Avenza app. Support points along the course include Nine Standards Rigg (about 7 km from the start), Tan Hill Road Crossing (about 18 km), Hard Level Gill (about 27 km) and the Dales Bike Centre support point (about 37 km). The Dales Bike Centre site provides indoor and outdoor covered space, toilets, hot and cold drinks, cake and soup, an outside gazebo and usually a medic; it is the only place on course where a participant may retire.
Mandatory kit is checked at registration and a downloadable checklist is provided (current version 3, dated 17/06/2024). A finishers’ drop bag is transported from start to finish (maximum weight 5 kg). The race awards winners’ trophies for first male and female and issues medals and an event top to finishers. The event contributes to UTMB and ITRA ranking (two ITRA points and three mountain points). Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
