Event overview
The Dales Traverse® is a 55 km ultra running event from Kirkby Stephen to Richmond following Wainwright’s coast to coast route. The route passes through the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, over the Nine Standards and into the Yorkshire Dales National Park, weaving through Swaledale to a finish below Richmond Castle. The course is described with an estimated height gain of 1,400 m and an adventurous, self-sufficient ethos. The minimum entry age is 18. Entries open 9 April 2025 and close 15 March 2026. Entry fees vary by date: £65, £75, or £85.
Route, support and rules
The route is not fully marked but follows an established long-distance path; participants receive a waterproof race map, a GPX file and a digital map via the Avenza app. The organiser operates named aid stations, including the Dales Bike Centre support point with indoor and outdoor covered space, toilets, hot and cold drinks and snacks. Medics are usually present at aid stations and retiring can only be done at aid stations. There are mandatory kit checks at registration; a survival bag is required and a Finishers Drop Bag (maximum weight 5 kg) is transported to the finish. The event contributes to UTMB and ITRA ranking points. Spectators are allowed at the finish but parking must use nearby public car parks.
