Overview
The Dales Traverse® is a 55 km ultra running event from Kirkby Stephen to Richmond following Wainwright’s coast to coast route. The route crosses the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, goes over the Nine Standards, and passes through the Yorkshire Dales National Park and Swaledale before finishing below Richmond Castle. The event promotes an ethos of self-sufficiency.
Route, distance and ascent
The advertised distance is 55 km with an estimated height gain of about 1,400 m. The route is not marked but follows a well established national hiking trail and is increasingly waymarked with official Coast to Coast signs. Organisers provide a waterproof race map at registration, a digital map via the Avenza app, and a GPX file; the GPX can change between editions and the final file is sent to participants before the event.
Aid stations, kit and services
The course is defined by Aid Stations and virtual guidance times. Retiring is only possible at Aid Stations. Medics are usually present at aid locations. A mandatory kit checklist is in use and kit is checked at registration; a survival bag is required. A finishers drop bag is transported from the start to the finish and must weigh no more than 5 kg. The finish location offers marquee space, toilets, a finishers bag, and a hot finishers meal with gluten free and vegan options. Entry requires being 18 or older and entry fees start at £65. A coach transfer between Richmond and Kirkby Stephen is available for a fee. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
