DalesRunner 40
DalesRunner 40 is an off-road running event that starts and finishes in the heart of Swaledale at The Dales Bike Centre in Reeth. The route leaves Grinton on a short road section and then follows moorland tracks, passing Maiden Castle Iron Age Hill Fort and ascending Whitaside Moor. Runners follow the Apedale Road to Dent’s Houses, then continue south onto Wensleydale sections across the Bolton Estate, passing Green Haw Hut and Carperby Moor before descending along Oxclose Road into the village of Carperby. Footpaths through pasture lead via West Bolton to Castle Bolton and back to Dent’s Houses, then up to the Height of Greets, down to Grinton Smelt Mill, across Sharrow Hill and through Cogden Hall to the finish.
The course surface includes hard packed footpaths and tracks, moorland trods and grassy pasture with some short road sections; trail shoes are recommended. Organisers describe this distance as a bit further, so it can be counted as a marathon. The route will be marked where it is shared with the Harkerside Hustle short course. Competitors receive a tracker and a GPX trace and will have road crossings marshalled. There is a single cut off at the first visit to Dent’s Houses (around 7.5 miles); runners who do not reach it in time will be redirected onto the short course option.
Aid stations are fully stocked with vegan and gluten free options. Post-race hot soup and a roll are included in the entry, and hot drinks and cakes are available for purchase. Entrants must be 16 or older; under-18s must be accompanied by an adult. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
