DalesRunner 40km : Semerwater and Wensleydale
DalesRunner 40km is an approximately 42 km trail race in North Yorkshire that starts in the village of Grinton and finishes at the Dales Bike Centre in Fremington. The route crosses Swaledale and Wensleydale, passing Maiden Castle Iron Age Hill Fort, Whitaside Moor, Dent's Houses, Pen Hill views, Green Haw Hut, Carperby Moor, Castle Bolton and Grinton Smelt Mill. The course mixes hard packed footpaths and tracks, moorland trods and grassy pasture, with some short road sections and a few boggy areas; trail shoes are recommended.
Competitors will be given a tracker and a GPX trace. The Wensleydale loop is unmarked and requires self navigation, though marshals will staff critical road crossings and some junctions. There is a cut off at the first visit to Dent's Houses (around 7.5 miles); runners who do not make this cut off will be diverted onto the shorter Harkerside Hustle route to complete a half marathon distance instead. An early start option is available for those who estimate taking longer than 6.5 hours.
Mandatory kit includes taped seam waterproof jacket and trousers, hat or buff, gloves, emergency blanket or bivvy bag, a cup or soft flask, at least 500 ml water, emergency food and a fully charged mobile phone. Toilets are available at the Dales Bike Centre and Carperby Village Hall. Aid stations will offer water, sweet and savoury food and a small supply of electrolyte tablets; Green Haw Hut will provide only sweets. Entries are limited to 200 runners and the event has an age limit of 18 and over. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
