DalesRunner 40
The DalesRunner 40 is a trail running event that serves as the finale of a racing series. The course starts and finishes at The Dales Bike Centre in Reeth, located in the heart of Swaledale. The route covers a distance slightly exceeding a marathon and features a variety of terrain including hard-packed footpaths, moorland tracks, grassy pastures, and short road sections.
Participants travel from Grinton across moorland tracks, passing landmarks such as the Maiden Castle Iron Age Hill Fort and Whitaside Moor. The course extends into Wensleydale, traversing the Bolton Estate with views of Pen Hill and Green Haw Hut. Runners pass through the village of Carperby and the historic Castle Bolton before returning via Dent’s Houses and the Height of Greets. The final sections include the Grinton Smelt Mill and Sharrow Hill before reaching the finish line.
The event provides the following distances:
- DalesRunner 40 (Marathon distance)
- Harkerside Hustle (Half marathon distance)
The course is fully marked. Runners are provided with a tracker and a GPX trace for navigation. Aid stations along the route offer various supplies, including vegan and gluten-free options. Road crossings are managed by marshals. A cut-off point is enforced at Dent’s Houses (approximately 7.5 miles); participants arriving after the cut-off are redirected to the shorter course option.
Entry includes a post-race hot meal consisting of soup and a roll. The event is open to participants aged 16 and older, though runners under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
