DalesRunner 40 : event description
DalesRunner 40 is a trail race around Swaledale and Wensleydale, starting and finishing at The Dales Bike Centre in Reeth on 4 October 2026. The route begins at Grinton, follows short road sections and moorland tracks, passes Maiden Castle Iron Age Hill Fort, ascends Whitaside Moor and proceeds via Apedale Road to Dent’s Houses. The course continues over the Bolton Estate and Carperby Moor, drops to the village of Carperby, passes through West Bolton and Castle Bolton, returns to Dent’s Houses, climbs to the Height of Greets and finishes at Grinton Smelt Mill then The Dales Bike Centre.
Surfaces include hard packed footpaths and tracks, moorland trods and grassy pasture, with some short road sections; trail shoes are recommended. Distance estimates are approximate and this route is slightly longer than a marathon. The route will be fully marked when shared with the Harkerside Hustle short course option.
Competitors will receive a tracker and a GPX trace and a map is available. Road crossings will be marshalled. There is a single course cut off at the first visit to Dent’s Houses (roughly 7.5 miles); competitors not reaching that point within the organisers cutoff will be redirected onto the Harkerside Hustle short course and complete approximately a half marathon instead.
Post event provisions included in entry are hot soup and a roll; hot drinks and cakes are available to purchase. Aid stations are fully stocked and include vegan and gluten free options. Minimum age 16; under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. Entries run from 27 November 2025 to 27 September 2026 with listed entry fees.
