Shrewsbury Thrifty Fifty
The Shrewsbury Thrifty Fifty is a midwinter, untimed run-walk-roll held at Wehner Park in Saint Louis. Participants choose one of three goals and complete repeated loops of the park course to reach that goal. The event encourages decorations, music, costumes, and other creative expression during movement. When a participant reaches their selected goal they may ring a large bell to mark the achievement.
Distances and formats offered:
- 50 minutes
- 50 kilometers
- 50 miles
The course is a 0.66 mile loop on asphalt trail and concrete sidewalk. Three loops equal two miles. Each loop includes one hill and two flat sections and gains 49 feet of elevation. Loop direction is clearly marked and changes every hour. Over multiple loops the course produces substantial cumulative elevation gain.
Organizers provide Gatorade, water, nutrition, a few electrical outlets, restrooms, and thumb-click lap counters. Participants use their own devices for digital tracking and results are recorded on the honor system. Registration is free and encouraged but anyone may join at any time. Organizers will personalize trophies for the ultramarathon distances and may accept small cash contributions to help cover pretzel costs.
