About the race
The Sheriff’s Shootout is a lap-based trail event held on November 7, 2026, near Mancos, CO. The course is a rugged one mile loop through high desert terrain with views of Mesa Verde and Sleeping Ute Mountain. Terrain features include steep ascents, rocky descents, piñon-juniper woodlands, and desert cliffs.
The layout brings runners back to the central hub every mile, where the main aid station and crew area are located. Racing options focus on completing as many laps as possible within time limits for individual and team formats. Team divisions require only one teammate on the course at a time and encourage strategic exchanges. Distances and divisions: - 12 Hour Jail Break (individual and team up to four) - 12 Hour Team Jail Break (teams up to four) - 6 Hour Pursuit (individual) - 6 Hour Team Pursuit (teams of two) A Hot Lap competition runs during the event; runners must check in before attempting Hot Laps, the leaderboard is updated throughout the day, and the fastest Hot Lap at the end of the event receives a $100 cash award and the title Fastest Outlaw. Aid station offerings include hydration, salty snacks, sweet items, and basic crew support.
The event includes camping and spectating areas near the course, a bonfire in the evening, and shared food including provided pulled pork sandwiches. Entry is free; participants are asked to bring a contribution for the aid station and at least one non-perishable item for donation to the Dolores Community Pantry.
