Shadow of the Giants 50k & 20k Run
The Shadow of the Giants is an annual running event held in the Sierra National Forest. Now in its 36th year, the race takes place on historic trails near Fish Camp, California. The event base is located at Camp Green Meadows Outdoor School, which serves as the hub for bib pickup and post-race activities.
Participants can choose from the following distances:
- 50k (31.1 miles)
- 20k (12.4 miles)
Both distances offer early start options for runners who require additional time. Those opting for the early start in the 50k have a total time limit of 9 hours to reach the finish line, while the regular start has an 8-hour limit. A final course cutoff is enforced at 3:00 PM. Early starters are eligible for age group awards but not for overall awards.
The course features aid stations positioned approximately 5 to 7 miles apart. These stations provide water, electrolyte drinks, gels, soda, and various sweet and salty snacks. Runners in the early start group are expected to be self-sufficient until reaching the second aid station. trekking poles are permitted on the course, though pacers and dogs are strictly prohibited.
Onsite accommodations are available the night before the race in the dormitories at Camp Green Meadows. These bunks are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and guests must bring their own bedding and pillows. A pre-race lasagna dinner is also hosted in the dining hall for those who pre-order tickets. Post-race food and beverages are provided for participants at the dining hall following their run.
