About the race
The Salute to Steve Prefontaine event on 26 September 2026 takes place at the J.R. Alford Greenway, 2500 Pedrick Rd., Tallahassee, FL 32317. Gulf Winds Track Club organizes two races that use much of the new single-track mountain bike trails within the greenway.
Distances:
- 1 mile (registration fee $15)
- 5K (registration fee $20)
The 5K course begins with a downhill section and enters single-track about 0.25 miles in. Runners follow nearly two miles of winding single-track through longleaf pines and natural scenery. The final mile includes two separate steep 400 m hills. The one mile course follows a loop that includes a portion of single-track trail.
Registration windows are listed for each race: the Prefontaine Mile registration opens 23 August 2026 and closes 20 September 2026; the Prefontaine 5K registration opens 23 March 2026 and closes 20 September 2026. A Steve Prefontaine dress-alike contest is included as part of the post-race awards and party.
