Event Overview

The Runnin' of the Green is a 5-mile running event in Rochester, New York, marking its 28th year in 2026. It is described as the unofficial start of the local racing season. The event takes place in mid-March.

Course & Format

The course is an out-and-back route along the Genesee River, starting and finishing on East Main Street outside the Mercantile on Main. In addition to the in-person race, a virtual participation option is available, allowing participants to complete the distance anywhere between specified dates.

Participants can choose from several event formats:

  • 5-Mile Run/Walk
  • Virtual 5-Mile
  • Ruckin' of the Green (carrying a weight over 5 miles)
  • Walkin' of the Green (3-mile walk)
  • Yoga of the Green

Registration & Details

Registration pricing varies, with a lower cost for participants aged 18 and under. A "Go Green" option allows participants to forgo the shirt and medal for a reduced fee. The event also serves as the 2026 USATF Niagara 5 Mile Open/Masters Association Championship, with prize money for USATF members. It is the first race in the Greater Rochester Track Club Runner of the Year series.

Packet pickup is available on several days before the event at local YMCA branches and the Rochester Running Company, as well as on race day at the venue.

Participant Perks

Registered participants receive a race medal (limited to the first 2000 registrants) and a long-sleeve shirt, while supplies last. Themed post-race snacks and beverages, such as green donuts, apples, cider, and beer, are provided. A complimentary bag drop service is available.
