Run Wild Races XIII: Sloth Run Fall 2026 at Metro Richmond Zoo
Run Wild Races XIII is a sloth-themed event held on 10/17/2026 at the Metro Richmond Zoo in Moseley, VA (8300 Beaver Bridge Rd). The day includes multiple on-site and virtual events, and each participant receives a free zoo ticket for race day.
The on-site events include:
- Mini 1 Mile: children ages 2-11, mostly zoo pathways, timed.
- 5k: all-terrain course through and around the zoo, timed.
- Wild Ninja (approx. 2 Miles): obstacle course with up to 42 obstacles, scored by obstacles completed.
- Ninja Full Access Spectator: accompanies and spectates the full ninja course.
Event details: The Mini 1 Mile runs mainly on zoo pathways with mixed surfaces (approximately 70% pavement, 20% grass, 5% gravel, 5% dirt). Mini participants ages 2 and older require a ticket; children 1 and under do not. Many animals may not be on exhibit during the run and may be available to see after the zoo opens.
The 5k is an all-terrain route that begins inside the zoo and continues around the perimeter, including off-site facilities such as the Cheetah Conservation Center. The course uses dirt, mulch, grass, gravel, and asphalt trails and includes winding turns, rolling and steep hills, bridges over creeks, and views of wildlife. 5k participants ages 5 and older need a ticket; children ages 5-10 must have a participating parent or chaperone.
The Wild Ninja course is not timed; competitors earn points for each obstacle. The scoring references IUCN Red List categories and measures obstacles completed. Wild Ninja is open to participants age 8 and older; competitors ages 8-14 need an adult to compete with them or a Ninja Full Access Spectator to walk the course. Contestants who complete all obstacles earn free entry to their next Wild Ninja event.
A Virtual 5k option is available. Virtual registrants receive a shirt, medal, and swag by mail; items are mailed the Monday before the race or the Monday after for later registrations.
Spectator notes: Ninja Full Access Spectator tickets allow walking the full course and viewing animal challenges; spectators receive a free zoo ticket on race day and may add a shirt for a fee. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
