Run Wild 5K at the North Carolina Zoo
The Run Wild 5K at the North Carolina Zoo is a running and walking event held on the grounds of the zoo property in Asheboro. Participants navigate a course that follows paved visitor pathways through the Africa and North America sections of the park. The terrain includes rolling hills characteristic of the North Carolina foothills.
The race route begins at the North America Connector road and finishes at the Solar Pointe picnic area. Along the path, participants may encounter sounds from the zoo's residents, such as lions and red wolves. Registration includes a ticket to the North Carolina Zoo, an event t-shirt, and a commemorative sticker. Post-race festivities and refreshments are provided at the Solar Pointe area after the finish.
Specific distances available:
- 5K (3.1 miles)
The course is open to all ages, including both runners and walkers, provided they can finish the route within a 90-minute time limit. Spectators are permitted to view the start and finish lines, which are located near Solar Pointe outside the main gates. However, spectators do not have access to the sections of the course located inside the zoo during the event. The zoo opens to the general public at 9 a.m. following the conclusion of the race. Registration proceeds support the protection of native salamander populations. Participation is limited to 650 individuals. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
