Run St Magnus
Run St Magnus is the eighth St. Magnus Marathon and Relay, taking place on 5 July 2026. The marathon route runs from Kirkwall’s St. Magnus Cathedral to Birsay Community Hall, following the historic route associated with St. Magnus.
- Full marathon, certified course
- Marathon relay, teams of three
- St Magnus 5K Fun Run, circular route around Birsay Hall
The marathon is a Scottish Athletics certified course, almost entirely on public roads that remain open to traffic. There are seven water stations along the route and runners may leave labelled bottles at stations 2, 3, 4 and 6 for collection. Runners must enter emergency contact details on the back of their race number and the use of personal music players is not permitted.
Entries for the marathon and relay are via Entry Central only; there are no entries on the day for these events. Transfers are allowed until 21 June 2026 after which entries are not exchangeable. A race time limit of 6 hours applies to the marathon; course support and services will be withdrawn after this time except in changed weather conditions.
Relay teams are responsible for transporting team members to changeover points. The three relay legs are 7.9 miles, 7.3 miles and 11 miles, with changeovers at school laybys and parking requested in the school car parks. First aid will be available at Birsay Hall and marshals will support safety on the course.
There are changing and toilet facilities at the start and finish, finish bags will be transported to Birsay Hall, catering and refreshments will be available at Birsay Hall on the day, and a prize giving will be held in the hall after the event.
