Run Jericho
Run Jericho is a community fundraising event in Jericho, Oxford, organised by the St Barnabas Primary School PTA with volunteers. The event takes place at St Barnabas C of E Primary School, Hart Street, Oxford, and includes several running distances.
- 10 km race
- 5 km race
- Children's 1 mile race
The first Run Jericho was organised by parents in 2011. The event has continued over the years with new parents and teachers helping to run it. Runners follow routes that loop around the local Jericho streets and Port Meadow, and local residents provide support along the course.
Since the first race, the event has raised over £100,000 for St Barnabas Primary School. Funds have paid for playground climbing frames, community owned solar panels, Chromebook laptops, an oven for an after school cooking club, sports equipment, library books, picnic tables, an art mural, and a forest school area with an outdoor classroom and play features.
Organisers describe Run Jericho as a community effort that depends on volunteers and local sponsors. The event also promotes ecological awareness: attendees are encouraged to use reusable bottles and to travel by foot, bike or public transport. After each race the course is cleared of rubbish and organisers welcome additional green ideas for future events. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
