The event was started in 2009 with an initial fundraising goal of $5,000 for the Down syndrome community. By its 16th year, it had donated nearly $600,000. Starting in 2025, the event benefits two organizations: Team Heart & Sole and DSACO (Down Syndrome Association of Central Ohio).

Team Heart & Sole provides inclusive opportunities for individuals with disabilities to participate in endurance events in Ohio. DSACO supports families and promotes community and opportunities for people with Down syndrome.
