Event Details

This event is the 3rd Annual RUCK Cancer Walk/Run, organized by the Professional Fire Fighters of Chesapeake, IAFF Local 2449. It takes place on Saturday, March 21, 2026. The location for the 2026 event is Bells Mill Park at 424 Albemarle Drive in Chesapeake, Virginia.

The event has two distance options:

  • Short5K
  • Long10K

Participants are encouraged to ruck, meaning they can wear a ruck sack or a 35-pound weighted vest. The organizers have 35 CFD SCBAs (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) available for participants to use, though carrying weight is not required to take part. Prizes are awarded for the first-place overall male and female finishers in the 10K distance who are wearing an SCBA, weighted vest, or ruck sack, as well as for the first-place male and female wearing a 35-pound ruck sack.

The entry fee is $45. This fee includes a custom race t-shirt and a post-event cookout. To be guaranteed a shirt, registration must be completed by February 21, 2026.

Purpose and Background

The RUCK Cancer event is a fundraiser. It is part of the organizer's "Mustache March Madness" tradition, which began in 2014 to support local firefighters and their families battling cancer. The RUCK event itself started in 2024. In its first two years, the event saw 437 participants and donated $27,600 to 19 firefighter families in the Hampton Roads area.
