Event overview
Rowbotham's Round Rotherham is an annual long-distance trail event held in early October from the Manvers Waterfront Boat Club event centre. The main options are 80 km and 50 miles. The route is undulating with a total climb of about 800 m and lies at low altitude (below 150 m). The event is held under TRA permit and UK Athletics rules. The 43rd running is scheduled for Saturday 3 October 2026.
Route, format and safety
The course is divided into eight stages with varied underfoot conditions; stage lengths and climbs include: Stage 1 15.6 km (308 m), Stage 2 10.1 km (170 m), Stage 3 11.9 km (196 m), Stage 4 9.2 km (123 m), Stage 5 9.0 km (86 m), Stage 6 6.3 km (108 m), Stage 7 9.1 km (130 m), Stage 8 9.5 km (108 m). Underfoot ranges from hard-surfaced paths, road and canal towpath to field crossings, muddy tracks and woodland paths; some sections can be sloppy or wet. Relay teams are permitted and change at checkpoints. Competitors must register on the day and report to checkpoints and the finish as required by TRA/UKA rules; failure to return the electronic timing card incurs a charge. The route includes at least one railway level crossing and a railway bridge; participants are responsible for their own safety when crossing. Waterproof clothing and a torch are advised for early or late navigation, and navigation aids such as GPS are available for following the route.
