Event overview

Rowbotham's Round Rotherham is an organised trail event run by Rotherham Harriers and Athletics Club Trail and Fell Running Section. The event is offered over two distances: 80 km and 50 miles. It is normally held on a Saturday in early October and uses the Manvers Waterfront Boat Club (MWBC) as the Event Centre. The route is undulating with an overall climb of about 800 m through the area described as the South Yorkshire Forest, which is mainly rural land rather than continuous woodland. The event is licensed by the Trail Running Association and held under UKA rules. Entries for the next edition open in spring.

Route, format and practical information

The course is divided into eight stages with mixed underfoot conditions including hard paths, canal towpaths, tracks, roads, field crossings and woodland. Stage lengths range from about 6.3 km to 15.6 km and individual stage climbs vary; for example Stage 1 is 15.6 km with about 308 m climb and Stage 6 is 6.3 km with about 108 m climb. Navigation resources include maps, written route description and GPS data for phones and devices; recent maps remain valid unless changes are published. Relay teams may be formed of 2 to 8 people with changes at checkpoints. Participants are expected to follow event rules, take responsibility for their own safety, and take care at a railway crossing and at a later bridge crossing on the route. Torches and waterproof clothing are recommended for early or late running in autumn conditions. Sponsors for upcoming editions include a local wealth management firm and a specialist running retailer. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
