Riverhead Forest - Auckland Trail Run and Walk Series
Riverhead Forest offers an extensive, changing network of trails through a pine plantation. Most of the courses run on clay tracks with sections of gravel and metaled road, and mud is commonly present. Shoes with good tread are recommended and participants sometimes pair up on slippery or steeper sections. Compulsory event briefings are held 15 minutes before each race.
Courses vary in distance and total climb. Short and mid courses remain lower in elevation overall, while long and super long routes travel deeper into the forest and gain more height, producing steeper climbs and elevated viewpoints. Aid stations provide PURE electrolyte hydration, water, ready salted chips, biscuits, oranges and lollies at specified kilometre markers on each course.
Driving directions reference 476 Ararimu Valley Road as the nearest mappable point, with event signage directing vehicles into the forest. Car parking is limited and later arrivals should expect a 15 to 20 minute walk to the event base. Participants are asked not to park until directed by parking marshals.
Safety guidance recommends carrying a hydration pack with 500 ml to 1 litre of liquid and items for personal safety such as a basic first aid kit, a cell phone, a whistle and additional warm clothing. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
