River-Run Backyard Ultra
The River-Run Backyard Ultra takes place in Waipukurau, Central Hawke's Bay, at the A&P Showgrounds on Saturday 24 October 2026. The event uses a repeat-lap format: runners complete a 6.7km loop on the hour, every hour, until only the final competitors remain.
The course is a flat loop composed of limestone paths and dirt single track that follows the Tukituki River. Sections of the route can become slippery or muddy when conditions are cold or wet. The course is marked for navigation.
Event headquarters are at the Waipukurau A&P Showgrounds, which serves as the start and finish area for each lap. Facilities at the venue include ample parking on tarseal and grass, space for tents or marquees for runner base stations, shade, toilets (including a portaloo approximately halfway on the course), taps for filling water bottles, power to illuminate the start/finish, a large covered shelter at the start/finish line, and a fire area.
The event is free to enter. There is a cash prize of $500 for the Last Man Standing and $500 for the Last Woman Standing. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
