River Rat Run
The River Rat Run is an athletic event held at the Lewis and Clark Lake Recreation Area in Yankton, South Dakota. The race honors the memory of SFC Rich Schild, with all proceeds donated to local nonprofit organizations. Participants can select from three distinct distances:
- 13.1 Miles (Half Marathon)
- 6.2 Miles (10k Run)
- 3.1 Miles (5k run/walk)
The courses utilize paved trails that navigate through the wooded areas of the Lewis and Clark Campground. The routes run alongside Lewis and Clark Lake and, for the longer distance, around Lake Yankton. There are two brief grass connectors between paved trail sections. The area is known for wildlife and serves as a winter habitat for bald eagles.
All races are chip-timed with video and manual backup systems. Participants must ensure their race bib remains visible from start to finish to avoid disqualification. Competitors are required to cross both the start and finish lines. Finisher medals are provided exclusively for those completing the 13.1 Miles distance.
Prizes are awarded to the top overall male and female finishers, as well as the first and second-place finishers in specific age divisions ranging from 1 to 99 years. To receive an award, participants must be present at the event, as prizes and shirts are not mailed out. Packet pick-up is held the day before the event at a local shop in Yankton, with additional check-in available at the Gavins Point picnic shelter on the morning of the races.
