River & Rails Donkey Dash
The River & Rails Donkey Dash is an inaugural burro racing event held in Cambridge, Idaho. This sport is inspired by Western mining history, where participants lead a donkey on foot rather than riding it. The race takes place on the Washington County Fairgrounds and follows an out-and-back course along the Weiser River Trail.
The route utilizes an old Pacific and Idaho Northern railroad corridor, passing through canyons and open farmland. The terrain is relatively flat with very little elevation change. Participants can choose from three different distances:
- 3 Miles
- 6 Miles
- 9 Miles
Each distance offers two registration categories: one for teams with a donkey and one for those participating without one. For those racing with an animal, all burros must be fitted with a halter and a lead rope no longer than 15 feet. Owners must provide their own donkey, as no rentals are available at the event site. Out-of-state animals must meet state health requirements, including a negative Coggins test.
The event is open to runners, walkers, and hikers. Participants are advised to wear layered clothing and trail shoes, and to carry at least one quart of water. Dry camping is available at the fairgrounds for a fee, though no stalls are provided. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
