River & Rails Donkey Dash : Cambridge, Idaho
River & Rails Donkey Dash is a burro racing and walking event held at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Cambridge, Idaho. The course is an out-and-back on the Weiser River Trail, following the Weiser River through canyon sections and open farmland along the former Pacific and Idaho Northern railroad corridor. The route has very little elevation change.
Distances offered:
- 3 miles burro division and non-burro division
- 6 miles burro division and non-burro division
- 9 miles burro division and non-burro division
Key participation rules and notes: Participants who enter a burro division must have their own donkey; rentals are not available. A team is one handler with one burro for the entire race; no swapping or riding of burros is allowed. Children age 12 and under may use an adult helper who stays with them for the 3-mile course only. All burros must wear a halter and a lead rope no longer than 15 feet. Jack or stud chains may be used with pressure/release technique but injuries caused by those devices can lead to disqualification. Sick or injured burros may not participate. Out-of-state burros must have a negative Coggins test and a health certificate as required by state law. Handlers must sign a waiver and accept race liability terms.
Camping and facilities: Dry camping is available at the fairgrounds without reservations for a fee of $10 per spot per night. There are no stalls; water is available on site and participants may bring corral panels or hot wire. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
