Ridge to Rails in Old Fort, NC
Ridge to Rails presents three trail races in the Old Fort area using a mix of new and existing trails around the Old Fort Gateway Trail system and Camp Grier. The event includes a variety of terrain, with smooth runnable sections, technical singletrack, and short stretches of gravel and forest service roads.
Race distances
- 50k
- Half marathon
- 10k
The 50k is a large loop through the Mill Creek Valley that uses trails and FS roads such as Jarrett Creek Road, Star Gap Trail, Bernard Mtn Trail, Point Lookout Trail, Kitsuma Trail, Copper Ridge Trail, Rostan Trail, and Salt Gap Trail. Elevation for the 50k is about 5,700 feet of gain and loss. The half marathon is a point to point course from the crest of the Blue Ridge into the Old Fort Gateway Trail system, described as a net downhill that loses roughly 2,500 to 2,600 feet over about 13 miles. The 10k links many new Gateway trails in a figure eight with about 750 feet of gain and loss.
Aid stations are provided on each course: five on the 50k, two on the half at about miles 5.6 and 9.5, and one on the 10k at mile 3. Packet pickup is available Friday evening at a nearby brewery and on race morning at the start. Race rules include staying on marked trails, checking into all aid stations, no pacers, and leaving no litter. Spectator access is limited and parking is organized at Camp Grier.
