Rhayader Running Club Downhill 5k

The Rhayader Running Club hosts a unique running event in the Elan Valley featuring a net descent of approximately 400 feet. New for the 2026 edition, the route takes participants across the Craig Goch Dam, offering views of the surrounding reservoir and landscape.

The course begins on an open road near the Craig Goch reservoir before transitioning onto a downhill section of the Elan Valley trail. The final segment of the race returns to a tarmac surface, with the finish line located near the Ty Penbont Tearooms. Due to the significant elevation loss, the course is not officially measured for Welsh Athletics results, though it covers a distance of approximately 5 km.

The event is open to runners aged 14 and older. Registration and race number collection take place at the finish area, which also provides limited parking and the location for post-race presentations. From the registration point, the starting line is reachable via a signposted two-mile walk. Facilities including toilets are available near the start.

The race follows a Welsh Athletics licence and recognizes top finishers. Prizes are awarded to the first three overall finishers as well as the winners of individual male and female age categories. This event is not suitable for wheelchair athletes. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
