Event Overview
The Rend Lake Marathon takes place in Barren township, Illinois, offering a scenic route through a significant natural area of southern Illinois. The event features multiple distances to accommodate different preferences:
- Marathon (USATF certified)
- 1/2 Marathon
- 1/4 Marathon
The course utilizes a combination of paved paths and rolling country roads. Participants cross the lake for panoramic views and travel along a bike path that passes local highlights, including South Sandusky Beach, the Rend Lake Marina, the Visitors Center, and the spillway. The route also winds through vistas near Lake Hamilton and Lake Benton before returning to the bike path to finish at North Marcum Beach.
Course Details and Amenities
Seven aid stations are positioned along the course at approximate intervals. Each station provides water, Gatorade Endurance, and portable toilets, while specific stations also offer gel fuel.
Participants receive a finisher medal unique to their distance. These medals feature a magnetic side, allowing them to be connected to one another. Awards are distributed at the finish line area. For logistics, buses are used to transport runners from the meeting point at North Marcum Beach to the various starting locations.
