The World's Longest Relay
Relay Iowa is a multi-day endurance event where teams traverse the state of Iowa over a distance of 339 miles. The journey takes place continuously over three days and nights, requiring teams to manage running, navigation, and resting in a rotating relay format.
Team Participation
Participants form teams of up to 12 runners. While smaller groups are permitted, at least 8 members are suggested for those new to the event. Individuals without a team can use a free agent portal to connect with existing groups. Once a captain registers the team, members coordinate their own vehicle logistics, typically using two large vans or three smaller vehicles. The structure involves one group running while other members eat, sleep, and advance to the next transition point.
The Course
The 339-mile route passes through a variety of landscapes, including gravel roads, two-lane winding paths, farmland, and forested areas. Along the course, organizers provide sponsored pit stops and checkpoints. These locations may offer services such as hot meals, showers, or space for resting. Teams are responsible for planning their own specific leg durations and internal rest schedules while following the designated route.
Fundraising and Community
The event serves as a fundraiser for local Iowa charities and Restoring Hope International. Participants are encouraged to engage in fundraising activities alongside their athletic preparations. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
